"MR" in black, which represent for sure MR. Whether they are
“official” is not known.

The Republican Movement (in French, Mouvement Républican, MR) was founded on 23 August 1996 by lawyer Rama Valayden, as the follower of the Groupe de Réflexion d’Emmanuel Anquetil (Emmanuel Anquetil Reflexion Group, GREA), founded on 23 November 1995 and named after E. Anquetil (d. 1946), one of the founders of the Mauritius Labour Party (MLP).
On 16 February 1999, the MR organized a big, free concert for the decriminalization of the use of gandia, the local cannabis. The next morning, the police arrested five people accused to have smoked gandia during the concert. Among them was the musician Kaya (b. 1960), inventor of the seggae, a mix of reggae and séga, the local blues. Kaya was found dead in his cell on 21 February. The official thesis of the overdose was quickly rejected following an independent expertise proving that Kaya had been beaten to death. The annoncement of Kaya’s death cause the worst riots ever seen in Mauritius, close to turn into an ethnic clash.
For the first time, the MR took part in 2000 in the general election; Sunil Dowarkasing was elected to the Parliament. In 2005, the MR joined the Social Alliance / Alliance Sociale led by the Mauritius Labour Party; the MR had no representative elected but Rama Valayden, although not elected at the Parliament, was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Human Rights.
